Rush seat replacement

Traditional rush seating is made from bulrush which is a wetland grass-like plant. Once dry it is hand twisted and woven over and around the seat frame.
There are other materials used for weaving seats such as seagrass, paper fibre rush, pre twisted rush and Danish cord.

The chair below is a lovely Cherry wood rocker that came into the workshop needing its seat replacing. Newly woven rush seats have a greenish tinge, but over time it will mellow to the golden colour you would normally associate with a rush seated chair

Cane seat replacement

Caning is the art of weaving rattan cane or rattan peel together to form a decorative pattern similar to the example above. The process was introduce to England in the second half of the 17th Century.

These chairs came into the workshop in a poor state and had to be completely taken apart. The joints were then cleaned and reglued using traditional hide glue, and new pegs were put through the joints. The polish work was revived and the seats recaned the traditional way,
The new cane work was then coloured to match the existing cane on the back of the chairs.
